What happens to your Facebook when you die

Facebook is the largest social media platform where billions of people interact each day. Like everyone else on the web will make a Facebook account once or few times with in your lifetime in order to stay connected with loved ones, family and friends. Our lives are somehow dependent upon online websites like Facebook, Google and YouTube. However, amongst them, Facebook is the most interactive one as it genuinely lets you connect with people from every corner of the world.

But have you ever wondered about what will happen to your Facebook account after your death. Because if you do, then this article will surely be of your liking. First and foremost, Facebook has already thought of a decisive plan to solve the issue of having an account of a passed away person. And that plan is to let you activate a programmed system called “Legacy account”. Once it is activated your Legacy account will be able to do some forms of previous activities which you did while you were alive.

A legacy account must only be activated if the user of thatindividual account is memorialized/dead. Besides that, you must be at least 18-year-old in order to activate your legacy account. After activating, you will have to select an individual who will act as the user that looks after your Facebook account after your death. Such individual is called legacy contact. Lastly, as stated by Facebook, the person chosen as your legacy contact will be able to perform the following things:

Write a pinned post for your profile (example: to share a final message on your behalf or provide information about a memorial service).

Respond to new friend requests (example: old friends or family members who weren't yet on Facebook)

Update your profile picture and cover photo

Request the removal of your account

You also have the option to allow your legacy contact to download a copy of what you've shared on Facebook, and we may add additional capabilities for legacy contacts in the future.

Your legacy contact can't:

Log into your account

Remove or change past posts, photos and other things shared on your timeline

Read your messages

Remove any of your friends

Learn more about memorialization and how to add a legacy contact to your account.

If you're a legacy contact, learn how to manage a memorialized profile.
