Thakuri as a historical meaning
The
word Thakuri (ठकुरी) is associated with ruling clan. Some say that
Thakuris are originated from Rajput of India; they had entered Nepal to
escape from Muslim evasion. Some say that, all ruling clans at different
time frame in Nepal were considered 'Thakuri'. Some claim the Newar
Malla kings of Kathmandu valley (1200-1768) belong "Thakuri clan" as
they are referred to as "Thaku juju dya" meaning "Thakuri Raja Dev".
History of Thakuri kings
First Thakuri king in Nepal was Ansu-Barma (605-629 AD) who ruled
during Lichhivi Period (approx 400-877 AD) Though he was not a Lichhavi,
he married a daughter of the Lichhavi king, Shivadeva. He impressed his
father-in-law and became de facto ruler. But after Ansu-Barma Lichhivi
came back into the power. Though it is not clear if Ansu-Barma was Khas
thakuri or not. (Link3) In October, 869 A.D. Thakuri king Raghv Dev
founded his ruling dynasty in Central Nepal defeating Lichhivis. They
ruled until 12th century and the famous rulers of that period were
Gunakama Dev (949- 994 AD), Laxmikama Dev (1024 -1040 AD), Vijaykama
Dev, Bhasker Dev (Nuwakot-thakuri clan), Bala Dev, Padma Dev, Nagarjun
Dev, Shanker Dev(1067-1080AD), Bam Dev (clan of Ansu Barma), Harsha Dev,
Sivadeva III
(1099-1126AD), Mahendra Dev, Mana Dev, Narendra Dev II, Ananda Dev,
Rudra Dev, Amrit Dev, Ratna Dev II, Someswar Dev, Gunakama Dev II,
Laxmikama Dev III and Vijayakama Dev II. But we do not find much
evidence about this historical period. When the first Malla king
Ari-Malla (or Ari dev) started his own dynasty in 12th century AD, the
rule of Thakuri dynasties ended in the central Nepal. But in western
Nepal the powerful Khas empire and some newly formed Baise/chaubise
states were being ruled by Thakuri kings. Later on, King Prithivi
Narayan Shah of Gorkha (one chaubise state) united Nepal and founded
Shah dynasty which ruled for the period of 1768-2008 AD. Shah is also a
Thakuri Caste.
